Karen Coates, RN BSN, currently teaches Medical Terminology here in the WACC. She attended the University of Maryland. She is married & has two daughters, ages 17 & 24.

In her own words, Karen says:
After high school, I landed a great job in an insurance company while attending college classes in the evening. After several years of feeling unfulfilled, I decided to explore health care. The first class I took was medical terminology. After becoming interested in health care, I became a nurse. I was fortunate enough to train at and work with physicians from Johns Hopkins, and the University of Maryland. I have worked in units such as medical-surgical, telemetry, post-op, IV therapy and the Intensive Care Unit. The ICU was my favorite because it allowed more autonomy and the utilization of more skills and knowledge. I became a certified nurse in ICU and ACLS certified which requires more education. Being ACLS certified allowed me the opportunity to be a part of the rapid response team. At this time in my life, I am grateful to be an instructor at WACC. This opportunity allows me to take what I have learned and experienced and share it with students who have expressed an interest in healthcare.

Thanks so much, Karen, for allowing us to feature you on the blog today. We are so thankful to have you here in the WACC!

Mrs. Coates Medical Terminology students recently had a guest speaker, Melissa Pence, a Registered Nurse from Kosciusko Community Hospital, come in to discuss antibiotic stewardship and the flu.
Mrs. Coates' Medical Terminology students are using Quizlet Live to review medical terms in class. This online learning tool is a place where all students can share knowledge in any subject and at any level. It not only allows students to work together and enhance communication amongst eachother as part of a team, but also reinforces their vocabulary and accuracy over speed.
Dr. Matt Houck, from Physical Rehab, discussed physical therapy today in Mrs. Coates Medical Terminology class.
