Courses are taken on the Ivy Tech campus. Upon successful completion, students earn college credit. Course material includes an overview of health care professions and standards. Course material also covers medical terminology and provides a basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology, special procedures, laboratory procedures and pharmacology. Emphasis is on forming a foundation for a medical vocabulary including meaning, spelling, and pronunciation. Course material will also teach students the skills necessary to become a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and to obtain a CNA license, thus allowing them to work in long-term care facilities. This course prepares students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes essential for providing basic care in extended care facilities, hospitals, and home health agencies under the direction of licensed nurses. Students learn hands-on nursing skills in the classroom and laboratory setting as well as attending a clinical site (nursing home).
This program also includes work-based learning and students spend time observing in different health care settings as well as listening to guest speakers from the healthcare field. Upon earning a CNA license, students will also be able to explore possible job opportunities as a CNA. Transportation to Ivy Tech and work-based learning sites is required daily and must be provided by the student. Students are responsible for the cost of college textbooks, scrubs, CPR class, a background check, a physical, two Mantoux tests, and drug screening.
